Scores O’Stores
Around the corner from Café Stella in Sunset Junction, Driftwood services some basic needs for stylish survival: music, clothes, furniture, books, and art. Owner David Browne, who used to run a birdcage gallery in Echo Park, has laid graphic T-shirts (one features Mickey Mouse with a skull head) on vintage army hospital stretchers. There’s an old sewing machine, which he says will soon be put to use during store hours. Between the old rock records, Browne’s own handmade furniture, plus vintage shoes, clothes, and maps, this is a true lifestyle store, and more hip than hipster. The store even has its own clothing line, basics and graphic T-shirts. 3938 Sunset Blvd., Silver Lake, 323-644-1272.

Melissa Coker's Fantastic Fab Five:
"This is my favorite new vintage store on Sunset. I'd describe their vibe as Fleetwood Mac meets Picnic at Hanging Rock. I ran into Alexa Chung and Tennessee Thomas there on my last visit. I mean, how can you go wrong with a stamp of approval from those two little ladies, and the prices are great, too."
3938 W Sunset Boulevard (at Sanborn Avenue); Los Angeles; 323-644-1272.

A Handsome Newcomer to Sunset Junction: Driftwood
Driftwood is light and airy, but still rustic and handsome at the same time. It's a well-organized hodgepodge of new and vintage clothes, vinyl, books, and even furniture. Being that it's so new, their "vintage" selection is a bit on the modest size. (And we use vintage in quotes because we saw a few pieces from J Crew, which is hardly vintage…maybe vintage in spirit or aesthetic, but still.) But well-picked and well-priced: sweaters in the $30 range, dresses for $40 - $50ish, and a lot of good quality menswear, including a few more recent blazers in impeccable condition for one hundred and some change.

It was the new offerings that impressed us the most. Great tees for $34. Driftwood also stocks a line of jeans we liked…the logo was in a scripty font, so we couldn't really read it…Them jeans, perhaps? (Perhaps not, since that's also the name of a fairly popular DJ…) But anyway, they're dark-wash with a slim silhouette and an even slimmer pricetag: $75 for both men's and women's jeans.

We applaud Driftwood for offering a good mix that's probably going to go over like gangbusters in this neighborhood. We really hope they'll bring in more new merchandise, since they've clearly got an affinity for it. And since it's a nice space in a terrific location, we hope they'll throw regular parties, too. They're at 3938 Sunset Blvd. in Silver Lake. (323-644-1272)

Driftwood
It's no secret that we had a big crush on Berdhouse Gallery (and its amazing DIY wood wall). David Browne, mastermind behind this charming store has opened up a second shop in the heart of Sunset Junction for us to ooh and ahh over. The large space used to house Kicks shoes but now plays host to Driftwood, a store boasting custom furniture, all things vintage and inspiring design elements.

David handmakes furniture (tables, coffee tables, chairs, bookcases and picture frames) from reclaimed timber. If that's not enough, they're numbered, signed and stamped with 5% of the proceeds going to Tree People (who are doing their part to make Los Angeles sustainable for all). Also in stock are large vintage classroom scrolls, organic throws and unique home accessories. We also took away tons of inspiration and a new love for the stores wall made from lath. Open shelving consisting of custom cut safety glass and chrome brackets also grabbed our attention. A little bit industrial, with a dash of school house charm--it was the perfect combo that left us wanting more.
